Adjectives have different functions depending on the role they play with the noun they modify.
There are five different adjective categories:
- descriptive adjectives
- demonstrative adjectives
- possessive adjectives
- indefinite adjectives
- comparative and superlative adjectives
Lesson outline

Adjectives are generally placed after the noun they modify.
Examples:
- Amberes es una ciudad interesante. (Antwerp is an interesting city.)
- Me gustan las tartas saladas. (I like salty cakes.)
Demonstrative, possessive and indefinite adjectives generally occur before the noun they modify.
Examples:
- Demonstrative: Esta tarta está caliente todavía. (This cake is still hot.)
- Possessive: Su casa está en la esquina. (His/Her house is in the corner.)
- Indefinite: Algunos alumnos se han ido a casa ya. (Some students have already gone home.)

Gender and number of Spanish adjectives
All of them must agree in gender (masculine, feminine) and number (singular, plural) with the noun they modify.
Examples:
- La gata de Lucía es blanca y negra. (Lucía's cat is black and white.)
- Tengo dos relojes dorados. (I have two golden watches.)
1. Descriptive adjectives
Descriptive adjectives describe the qualities of a noun.
Example:
El niño está triste. (The child is sad.)
2. Demonstrative adjectives
Demonstrative adjectives indicate the location of a noun.
Examples:
- Cierra esta puerta. (Close this door.)
- Me gusta ese par de vaqueros. (I like that pair of jeans.)
- Abre aquella ventana. (Open that window over there.)
3. Possessive adjectives
Possessive adjectives express possession or ownership.
Examples:
- Mi gato es naranja. (My cat is ginger.)
- Un amigo mío nació en Paris. (A friend of mine was born in paris.)
4. Indefinite adjectives
Indefinite adjectives indicate the indefinite idea of quantity and quality of nouns.
Examples:
Quiero otra galleta. (I want another biscuit.)
5. Comparative and superlative adjectives
Comparative and superlative adjectives express the quality degree of nouns.
Examples:
- Eres más alto que yo. (You are taller than me.)
- Lucas es menos inteligente que su hermano. (Lucas is less clever than his brother.)
- Soy tan baja como tú. (I am as short as you.)
- Marta es la más guapa de la escuela. (Marta is the most beautiful of the school.)
Using adjectives as nouns
To form nouns with adjectives, you need to add an article (definite or indefinite) before the adjective.
Examples:
- ¿Cuáles guantes prefieres? Me gustan los blancos. (Which gloves do you prefer? I like the white ones.)
- Me gusta esta guitarra, pero lo malo es que es muy pesada. (I like this guitar, but the bad thing is that it is too heavy.)

Elena is an excellent teacher and a very nice person. I have been training in Spanish with Elena for quite some time now after her being recommended to me by a friend, and have consistently been very pleased with our lessons. While I do not consider myself to be very good at learning foreign languages, Elena is very patient and adapts the lessons to my ability, making me feel at ease. In fact, I find her to be extremely skilled at assessing exactly where I am at any given time with respect to my individual learning situation, and structuring the lessons accordingly. I think I probably would have given up trying to learn Spanish had I not began my study with Elena; and that would have been a shame in view of where I am now with the language. Because of Elena's skilled help, I am extremely pleased to not only be conversant in basic Spanish, but also have confidence that I will one day reach full proficiency with the language. No other learning method I tried before meeting Elena compares to the one-on-one, personalized instruction I receive from her, which comprises reading; writing; developmental exercises; and most importantly, conversation. To be able to look at Spanish now and have it appear largely familiar is extremely satisfying. I even plan to study Italian with Elena after reaching my desired level in Spanish. I can offer to teach Tagalog And English language. Method of my teaching for Filipino language should start by learning the Filipino alphabet . Material for teaching is books or textbook. I don't have an educational degree but I've experienced teaching and explaining certain things in a company that I worked before, just like a speaker and lecturer.
