Countable nouns as the name suggest are used for words that can be counted both in singular and plural form through the use of a determiner or a number before them.
Singular | Plural |
---|---|
A computer | Three computers |
A city | Two cities |
An item | Five items |
Countable nouns easily can be identified by the determiners placed before them. The most commonly used ones are "a" (before a noun with a consonant) and "an" (before a noun with a vowel). Sometimes you could also see the determiners "my", "the", "some".
Examples:
Uncountable nouns are used for words that can't be counted through the use of numbers and generally seen as a whole. Their form is singular and the verb used with them in a sentence is singular as well.
Uncountable nouns are used with:
Uncountable nouns | Uncountable nouns |
---|---|
Accomodation | Luggage |
Advice | Love |
Cheese | Magic |
Food | Milk |
Flour | Money |
Furniture | Music |
Genetics | News |
Grammar | Oil |
Hair | Paper |
Help | Production |
Homework | Rice |
Information | Rubbish |
Intelligence | Sand |
Juice | Silence |
Justice | Snow |
Knowledge | Sugar |
Laughter | Time |
Leisure | Traffic |
Luck | Work |
For these nouns, we can't use a numerical value to identify them. Therefore numerical determiners and articles could help us for that. The most commonly used identifiers and expressions could be found on the table below.
A way of measuring | Example |
---|---|
A pinch of | salt, sugar |
A cup of | tea, brocoli |
A handful of | almonds |
A bag of | flour, chips |
Some | help, advice |
1 kg of | sand, rice |
Great deal of | luck, information |
A lot of | traffic, grammar |
A bit of | music, information |
We already mentioned some of the pronouns that could be used with nouns. In the following two tables we will present you with few examples for countable and uncountable nouns using pronouns to clear out any confusion and how they could be used with the two types of nouns.
Countable noun + pronoun | Example |
---|---|
Some | I bought some eggs. |
Any | Do you have any apples? |
Many | There aren't many cities as old as Plovdiv. |
Few | There are a few chairs in the kitchen. |
Uncountable noun + pronoun | Example |
---|---|
Some | Can you bring me some juice? |
Any | Is there any sand in the garage? |
Much | You don't have much luck, do you? |
Little | I could use a little help with that couch. |

I am an English teacher from Liverpool in England. I have been teaching around the world in countries that include Indonesia, Malaysia, Belgium, Taiwan and Spain.
I now teach English and Geography in a secondary school in Liverpool but retain my passion for teaching EFL by doing online lessons. I am a lively, dynamic and well organised teacher, and I like to provide stimulating lessons where communication is the main goal.
I want to target my lessons so they give you, the student, exactly what you are looking for. My experience means I can give classes in conversation, all levels of English, academic or exam classes or Business English. I have learnt several languages myself and I have found that speaking is the best way to learn, so I employ the communicative method in teaching, but set homework assignments and give written feedback outside the lessons.
Book a free trial lesson and we can have a chat, find out about you and what your goals are in learning English. Hope to see you soon!

Dear all,
Would you like to learn a new language such as Italian, English or Spanish in a smooth, accessible and fun way? Then, it would be a great idea to embark on an exciting journey together!
My big priority is to make sure that my students will learn a new language and get much more familiar with a new culture as fast as possible by doing dynamic and funny activities which suit everyone’s needs and passions. Song lyrics, texts from your favourite books, literature, parts of movies, news, TV series, traditional recipes may be only some of the instruments that we can use in order to make the learning process more efficient and focused on using the new language in different fields.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Languages and Literature from the University of Verona (Italy) and a Master’s Degree, cum Laude, in Languages and Media from the University ‘Cattolica’ in Milan (Italy) and Chapman University in Orange, California (USA).
If you are a proper beginner, if you already know a few words but you don’t dare to speak to anyone yet, if you are already very confident with the language but you still want to get to a higher level of proficiency, if you want to know better about one of these cultures, than this is a perfect course for you.
A nice introductory chat can help both of us to understand which is the starting level and which is the goal of the course in order to tailor a proper class according to your need.
Join the course and you will be immediately immersed in a new culture and in a heartbeat you will speak a new language!
See you soon!

**** Please contact me before booking a lesson, thanks! :-)*** Hello everyone, I'm Federica and I'm an italian and english teacher. Before being a teacher I've been a student infact I graduated in languages so I know very well how hard can be learning a new language. I'm interested in music, cinema, literature and I enjoy talking about several topics. I've been teaching since 2009 and in 2012 I've qualified as italian language teacher. I've experience with children and adults, with in company courses, with total beginners as well as with advanced. Also I've succesfully prepared a number of students for the most important english and italian certification (CELI, CILS, FIRST, PET, KET). Over the last years I've became specialized in one-to-one or small groups lessons because in this way I can create a tailored programme for each student. I follow a communicative approach and in my classes there's lot of room for speaking but I don't neglect grammar, listening and writing. I provide you with material, sometimes selfmade, other times taken from books, videos, or songs, but always useful to help you to immerse in the target language! At the end of every lesson I always assign homework in order to revise the things learnt. I define myself as a happy, positive and very patient person and I do my best to make the class a funny and relaxed moment. I look forward to meet you online!

English teacher with 13 years teaching experience in Italy. Speaks English and Italian.
Hi, I'm Jason, I'm English and live in Central Italy where I teach English to students of all levels, all ages and all abilities. English for school, for exams or tests, for work or for business.
My methods are based on building your confidence to speak English, developing your listening skills so you can understand English and helping you understand the grammar rules of the English language.
Why in this way? Because my students have the best results when they are able to speak in English as soon as possible. Then, when you can converse in English and understand simple conversation you can develop all your language skills very quickly.
Of course, for some students, grammar and written English is a priority and I can help you develop these skills first if that is what you need.
For others they need to learn specific vocabulary for their work, I have given courses in business, medicine and tourism that can be adapted for all types of work situations.
I am teaching students from 3 to 70 years old and my lessons are adapted for every individual so they have the best opportunity to realize their goals.
If you are interested then please contact me for a chat and a free trial lesson.

Hello,
I was born in İstanbul and I lived there. I hold a bachelor degree in cinema and television at İstanbul Şehir University. During my university years, my stories have been published in major Turkish literary magazines. After my graduation I have been specializing in children's book illustration and literature. I founded children's book publishing house in Turkey. The name is Yıldız Tozu Publishing and my books were released. I worked as an editor-in-chief in the company. I was finding books in the world and I was publishing them in Turkish. I am practically and professionally working on Turkish language and literature. Later on, I moved France to continue my education and works about literature and art. Currently, I am learning french.
I have experience in teaching Turkish in years. Furthermore, I speak English very well (TOEFL B2) and French (B1) it is advantage for students who are beginners.
Here my methodology when I teach Turkish:
I will use the grammar books and my presentations, time to time.
For speaking practice: illustrations, daily conversations
For listening practice: Turkish songs, movies, series
For reading practice: news and articles about Turkey (for advance students), stories, picture books (for intermediate students), texts from language books (for beginner and intermediate students.)
If students need to focus specific area like writing etc. I am designing my class according to that.
In addition, it is because I am using broad material about Turkish media, you will be familiar the culture and sociology of Turkey.
I like to do lesson in creative and in an organized way; therefore, I believe you will learn fast and you will enjoy learning Turkish with me!
I hope to see you in my class :)

Hi! My name is Joyce and I am from Glasgow in Scotland. I’m looking forward to meeting you online to help you improve your English!
I have a degree in French and German, and have worked in tourism for over 30 years, living in many different parts of the world. I love learning about and getting to know different cultures.
I love travelling and have been fortunate enough to work as an overseas representative, and then manager, for British tour operators in such diverse places as Bulgaria, Spain, Jamaica, Italy, Austria, Paris, Thailand and Cancún, where our objective was always to provide the best possible service to our customers, the holidaymakers.
I then stayed in Cancún, spending over 15 years with Mexico’s principal travel company in the growing e-commerce sector, specialising in online sales and reservations, customer care and corporate travel.
Times are changing and looking for a new challenge I have taken the opportunity this year to add to my skills and have obtained certificates in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and Teaching English Online. I’m really looking forward to putting these to good use in helping you to improve your English vocabulary, grammar and conversational skills. We will go at your pace, incorporating reading, writing, listening and speaking, with enjoyable interactive activities to make learning fun.

Hi, welcome to my profile!
My name is Alessia and I currently live in Italy. I spent a few years in the United States where I deepened my knowledge of English and American dialects. I am currently specializing in Spanish and German. Over the years, I have given private lessons in Italian, English, Spanish, and Japanese, with Japanese being the most requested at the moment. Regarding Japanese, I had the opportunity to teach the language at an American college with a native Japanese teacher, applying the method that they use to learn their own language. I will help you in a simple way; conversation is really important for learning a language, and a good method is even more fundamental. No days spent on textbooks are needed; consistency and fun during lessons are the most important parts of learning. You will see results right away! I am patient, flexible, and will adapt in every way to your personal needs. I look forward to seeing you on my profile for a trial lesson and discovering an easy and fun method to learn a language as soon as possible.

Andy is a very good teacher. I love his commitment and his way to teach me a better use of the English language. I like his reviews and summaries of the last lesson - they help me to think again about the topics we have discussed. I recognize my English is becoming more confident and more fluent.

Dear all,
Would you like to learn a new language such as Italian, English or Spanish in a smooth, accessible and fun way?
Maddalena
