Subject pronouns (pronombres personales de sujeto) identify who or what is perfoming the action indicated by the verb.
Since the verb ending already tells who the subject is, subject pronouns in Spanish are generally omitted.
Examples:
Singular subject pronoun | English translation | Example |
---|---|---|
Yo | I | Yo tengo 26 años. (I am 26 years old.) |
Tú | You | Tú eres muy simpático. (You are very nice.) |
Él | He | Él trabaja en una empresa de transportes. (He works for a transportation company.) |
Ella | She | Ella es mi prima. (She is my cousin.) |
Usted | You (formal) | Usted es la culpable, Doña Paloma. (You are guilty, Mrs Paloma.) |
Tú carries the accent mark to distinguish itself from the possessive adjective tu.
Example:
¿Tú sales esta noche? (Are you going out tonight?) VS Tu novio es muy simpático. (Your boyfriend is very nice.)
Él carries the accent mark to distinguish itself from the definite article el.
Example:
Él tiene 24 años. (He is 24 years old.) VS El perro de Juan se llama Valentín. (The dog of Juan is called Valentín.)

Unlike the singular forms, plural subject pronouns have a masculine and a feminine form.
Masculine | Feminine | English translation | |
---|---|---|---|
Nosotros | Nosotras | We | |
Plural subject pronouns | Vosotros | Vosotras | You |
Ellos | Ellas | They | |
Ustedes | Ustedes | You (formal) |
Examples:
Since the verb ending already tells who the subject is, subject pronouns in Spanish are generally omitted.
Anyway, subject pronouns are used in the following cases:
Use | Example |
---|---|
emphasizing the subject | Él es lo que es inteligente. (He is the intelligent one.) |
answering a question referring to the subject | Quién quiere un trozo de tarta? Yo. (Who wants a piece of cake? I do.) |
making comparisons | Fernando es más guapo que yo. (Fernando is more handsome than I.) |
before: como a / hasta / mismo / también / tampoco | - Yo mismo no me lo creo. (I myself cannot believe it.) - Ella tampoco quiere irse a Amberes hoy. (She does not want to go to Antwerp today as well.) |
when using Usted or Ustedes | Es Usted muy bienvenido. (You are very welcome.) |
Spanish has no equivalent way to express the English subject pronoun it in impersonal expressions.
Examples:
Formal you | Informal you | |
---|---|---|
Singular | tú | Usted |
Plural | vosotros/vosotras | Ustedes |
The singular form of you in Spanish is tú.
It is the familiar way to address a friend, a member of your family and anyone you would treat with familiarity.
Example:
Tú eres lo más importante para mi. (You are the most important thing to me.)
The plural form of you in Spanish is vosotros.
It is only adopted in Spain and it has the same uses as tú.
Example:
Vosotros habláis muy mal el inglés. (You speak English very badly.)
Usted is the singular form used to show respect throughout the Hispanic world.
It is often shortened to Ud. and it needs the capital letter.
Example:
Quizá Usted pueda ayudarme. (Perhaps you could help me.)
Ustedes is the plural form used to show respect throughout the Hispanic world.
It is often shortened to Uds. and it needs the capital letter.
Example:
Ustedes pueden decirme qué pasa? (Could you please tell me what is going on?)
Most Spanish speakers from Latin America use Ustedes to express vosotros, so they use it in a familiar way.
Example:
Ustedes cómo se llaman? (What is your name?)
Usted and ustedes In many areas of the Spanish-speaking world, it is more common to address a listener informally. Anyway, they are still used for the following purposes:
Example: Sra. Romero, qué tal está Usted? (Miss Romero, how are you?)
Example: Puede Usted decirme su nombre? (Could you please tell me your name?) |

Unlike in other platforms, all our teachers are manually verified by our professional team. Trust in the experiences of our students.
I attended a Foreign Language High School in Italy and passed the first year at the University (foreign languages and literatures) in Udine, Italy.
I worked in the retail and hospitality industry in the past, assisting guests from all over the world, talking with them in Italian, English, German and sometimes French.
I managed an after-school program for children (elementary and middle school) with a friend, and I taught them how to improve their knowledge of English and German language.
I spent a year in Ireland, first working as an au pair and then as an employee at a corporation, dealing with the American and German markets.
I have recently got a Cambridge English certificate (C2 level) and a certificate for teaching online from Arizona State University. I am currently studying to get a German certificate (C1 level).
I offer English tailor- made lessons for everyone, regardless of age: students and employees, housewives and workers.
Depending on your needs, I can teach you the language starting with the basics, explaining topics which are difficult for you to understand, and having conversations, so as to have a more lively way to communicate.
I like to enrich my classes not only through textbooks, but also through elements taken from everyday life such as films, newspapers, books, and a good dose of creativity.
I am happy and proud to have helped many students to pass their foreign languages exams and to improve their grades, and to be still in touch with some of them.
I would like to be of use to all those who think that learning a foreign language is one more step towards improvement.

My goal is to make you confident and comfortable around others when speaking in English.
My academic qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Law and a Master of Business Administration. In the last 20 years I have been training people in English from many different industries - including Telecommunications, Publishing, Energy, Financial, Government, Entertainment, Construction, Pharmaceutical, Legal, Logistics. Consultancy, Insurance, Human Resources.
I have helped people prepare for presentations, negotiations, examinations and conducted workshops to assist in how to optimise written and audio communication and informal conversation "small talk".
My methodology depends on you and how you feel you can best learn. For that I would greatly appreciate your input. There are many different learning styles and we have a good forum to use many of them.

Hi everyone!
My name is Kilian, I am 29 years old and I am a Spanish guy from Canary Islands.
A year ago I graduated in Spanish Language at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and I also finished the course that accredits me as a DELE examiner for levels B1 and B2 by the Instituto Cervantes. After studying abroad for six months (Czech Republic) I knew that I wanted to dedicate myself to teaching Spanish as a foreign language, so here I am!
Of course, my mother tongue is Spanish, but I also have an intermediate level of English which can be very useful to solve some doubts that may arise during the classes.
So if you want to learn more about Spain, about the fourth most spoken language in the world, and one of the most widely spoken languages in the planet, I look forward to share with you all of my knowledge in our class!
All the best!

I offer smart and fun lessons for all levels and ages! I am a native Turkish speaker from Cyprus and an English teacher by profession. Alongside full-time teaching, I work as a freelance translator/interpreter (Turkish-English) on a part-time basis. I have extensive teaching experience especially with university students, secondary school students and adults. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner, I can help you (or your child) improve your language skills with customized lessons and authentic teaching material.
As a language teacher and a language learner myself, I am aware that everyone learns at their own pace and everyone learns in different ways. Therefore, addressing the needs of each student individually is crucial to my teaching approach. It is true that language learning takes time and commitment but online teaching has transformed the learning experience in such a way that, with the help of developing technology and the internet, you can accelerate your learning much faster than you can with traditional teaching methods. Some of the key elements in accelerated learning that I adapt in my teaching methodology are as follows:
Flipped Classroom:
In contrast to conventional teaching methods, students are provided with class material prior to the lesson. This allows them to practice what they have learnt during classroom discussions and activities.
Task-based Approach:
Traditional teaching approaches focused on the content that teachers thought their students needed to learn. This included a lot of emphasis on grammar. Task-based approach, on the other hand, focuses on the skills that the students want to acquire. The teacher no longer focuses on ‘what’ is taught but ‘why’ it is taught.
Lexical Syllabus:
In line with the task-based approach, lexical syllabus focuses on the vocabulary that the student needs to learn in order to perform a specific task. For example, the word ‘asset’ is essential for a business student, similarly, ‘biopsy’ is an essential word for a medical student.
My approach allows me to connect with students' previous learning experiences and knowledge and increase their reflection between what they learn and their life experiences. Overall, it is a student-centered, interactive, collaborative and communicative approach.

I started working as an Arabic teacher more than 10 years ago. During this time I have taught students from various countries and of different ages. They are learning Arabic for several reasons such as conversation, politics, Islam and literature. We have enjoyed learning with photos, videos, music and games to develop the different skills like speaking, listening, reading and writing. I studied two diplomas in teaching Arabic to foreigners at Cairo University and a course at the American University in Cairo and currently I am studying masters in the same field.

Hi,
I'm Poppy, 21, from England and I'm currently studying English, French and Spanish at Uni in Strasbourg, France.
I studied up until the age of 18 in Britain and am now living a bilingual life here in France, so I know the obstacles when it comes to learning a foreign language.
I have a qualification in teaching English (TEFL) and have been teaching for the past 6 months on another English-learning website called Cambly where i have met people from all over the world, some total beginners in English and others close to fluency.
I like students to be at ease during classes and the best way to do that, in my opinion, is to build a friendship and speak about the topics which interest them most, but of course in English! I am very flexible and sometimes read news articles with students which lead to discussions or Youtube videos from their favourite youtuber. The most important thing is to inspire the student to start speaking- once he/she does, we can start correcting their mistakes.
I also like to show students why being bilingual is such an amazing skill to have and how it can change your life prospects.
Poppy :)

My name is Alberto and I am 29 years old. I speak Spanish, English, French, German and Italian. As you might have seen, one of my passions is the study of foreign languages. I love learning them, studying them, and keeping permanently in touch with them.
I have been a foreign language teacher for eight years, and I have always obtained remarkably good results. I personnally love working as a language teacher. It is another opportunity of keeping studying one specific language whereas you are helping other people to learn.
In my clases I adapt myself to the needs of my student. We practice the speaking, the writing, or any other skill the student desires. We learn also grammar and vocabulary. I like to work with spread sheets of grammar and vocabulary to consolidate the grammar basis, but I also like using other ressources, such as films, books, videos, games, songs or articles from the newspaper.
I am quite patient comprehensive and kind. All the students that came to me with problems or difficulties bearing relation to the grammar have come through them with a great success after some lessons with me.
So I look forward to welcoming you all with open arms to help you discover a new language or improve your language skills.
Alberto
