Participles are known as kinds of a verb. Therefore, in German there are used two different participles: the present and the past participle.
The present participle is used, when two events happen at the same time. This kind of participle is always used as an adjective.
Sentence without a participle | Sentence with a participle |
---|---|
Das Kind weint und steht im Garten. (The child is crying and is standing in the garden.) | Das weinende Kind steht im Garten. (The crying child is standing in the garden.) |
Die Frau schreit und rennt aus dem Haus. (The child is crying and runs out of the house.) | Die schreiende Frau rennt aus dem Haus. (The screaming women runs out of the house.) |
As you might have recognized, the words weint and schreit are returned into the infinitive form and an -de was added to make it a present participle.

By using the present participle as an adjective, it has to be declined in order to adjust it to the noun it describes, depending on the gender, case and number of the noun. Due to different articles used, there exist different forms of declensions: weak declension (with a definite article), mixed declension (with an indefinite article) and strong declension (no preceding article). If you want to learn more about the four german cases just have a look at the special chapter about it.
Starting with the weak declension:
Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nominative | der weinende Junge | die weinende Puppe | das weinende Mädchen | die weinenden Kinder |
Accusative | den weinenden Jungen | die weinende Puppe | das weinende Mädchen | die weinenden Kinder |
Dative | dem weinenden Jungen | der weinenden Puppe | dem weinenden Mädchen | den weinenden Kinder |
Genitive | des weinenden Jungen | der weinenden Puppe | des weinenden Mädchens | der weinenden Kinder |
Coming to the mixed declension:
Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nominative | ein weinender Junge | eine weinende Puppe | ein weinendes Mädchen | einige weinende Kinder |
Accusative | einen weinenden Jungen | eine weinende Puppe | ein weinendes Mädchen | einige weinende Kinder |
Dative | einem weinenden Jungen | einer weinenden Puppe | einem weinenden Mädchen | einigen weinenden Kindern |
Genitive | eines weinenden Jungen | einer weinenden Puppe | eines weinenden Mädchens | einiger weinender Kinder |
And the strong declension:
Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nominative | weinender Junge | weinende Puppe | weinendes Mädchen | weinende Kinder |
Accusative | weinenden Jungen | weinende Puppe | weinendes Mädchen | weinende Kinder |
Dative | weinendem Jungen | weinender Puppe | weinendem Mädchen | weinenden Kindern |
Genitive | weinendes Jungens | weinender Puppe | weinendes Mädchens | weinender Kinder |
It's also possible that the participle is in a non-attributive function, meaning that the participle is isolated in the sentence. For instance, "Der Auftrag ist dringend." (The order is urgent."). Then the -d ending is enough.
The past participle, in contrast, signals that the noun of a sentence is in a certain condition or that two actions didn't happen at the same time. Many weak and strong verbs can be used as adjectives.
Sentence without participle | Sentence with participle |
---|---|
Ich verkaufe das Auto. Das Auto ist gebraucht. (I am selling my car. The car is used.) | Ich verkaufe mein gebrauchtes Auto. (I am selling my used car.) |
Die Frau ist gebildet und ist Professorin. (The women is well eductaed and is a professor.) | Die gebildete Frau ist Professorin. (The well educated women is a professor.) |
By constructing the past participle you have to be careful, because you need to transform the verb of a sentence into an adjective. By doing so, there are different options:
Infinitiv | Past participle | Example |
---|---|---|
kaufen (to buy) | ge-kauf-t | Bring bitte den gekauften Regenschirm mit. (Please bring the bought umbrella.) |
öffnen (to open | ge-öffn-et | Bitte mach das geöffnete Fenster zu. (Please close the opened window.) |
Infinitiv | Past participle | Example |
---|---|---|
aufrunden (to round sth. up) | auf-ge-rund-et | Ich habe die Summe aufgerundet. (I rounded the sum up.) |
angebrannt (to be burnt) | an-ge-brann-t | Die Suppe ist angebrannt. (The soup is burnt.) |
Infinitiv | Past participle | Example |
---|---|---|
zerstören (to destroy) | zer-stör-t | Die zersörte Stadt wird wieder aufgebaut. (the destroyed city will be rebuilt.) |
entwickeln (to develop) | ent-wickel-t | Das entwickelte Computerprogramm ist gut. (The developed computer program is good.) |
Infinitiv | Past participle | Example |
---|---|---|
repapieren (to fix) | reparier-t | Wo steht das reparierte Auto? (Where is the fixed car? |
studieren | studier-t | Der studierte Informatiker weiß viel. (The studied computer scientist knows a lot.) |
Infinitiv | Past participle | Example |
---|---|---|
kommen (to come) | ge-komm-en | Der gestern gekommene Katalog ist schön. (The catalog which arrived yesterday is fine.) |
fahren (to drive) | ge-fahr-en | Die gefahrene Route war schneller. (The droven route was faster.) |
There are some exceptions to this rule, for instance the verbs sein (gewesen), haben (gehabt), werden (geworden).
Build the correct participle form of the word in bold!
Reminder: Participle I indicates simultaneous actions - Participle II indicates seperate actions
Ich verließ (lachen) den Raum. (I left the room laughing)
Die Polizei fand mein (klauen) Handy wieder. (The police found my stolen phone)
Ich habe mir ein (brauchen) Auto gekauft. (I bought a used car)
Die (tanzen) Menge hörte die Musik. (The dancing crowd was listening to the music)
Ich esse die (pflücken) Birne. (I eat the plucked pear)
Der Vater wird vom (weinen) Baby wach gehalten. (The father is held awake by the crying baby)
Ich wärme das (kochen) Essen von gestern auf. (I warm up the cooked food from yesterday)
(schweigen) höre ich ihren Vortrag zu. (Silently I listen to the presentation)
Die Jacke (anziehen) verlässt er das Haus. (Putting on his jacket he leaves the house)
Sie fährt mit dem (reparieren) Auto zur Arbeit. (She drives with the fixed car to work)

I am French living in Lisbon in Portugal. I have lived in different countries such as England, the United States and India. It gave me some experience of learning a foreign language and teaching it.
I am passionate about different cultures and try to share my love for French culture with you in a lively way.
I adapt to the needs of the students, whether to improve their oral, written, prepare for an exam or a job interview. I prioritize the conversation to allow the student to "unblock" and have fun speaking the language. I write down the vocabulary and grammar that the student lacks to express himself.
Learning a foreign language is, in my view, above all through cultural curiosity. We want to learn a language because we want to live in the country, travel there or get to know it better. We feel attracted. It is its Culture that motivates us in our learning: music, film, text, literature, way of being and cultural differences forming "another world". This means that learning is not just about learning a list of words and grammar lessons, as is taught too often in school. Practice again and again through conversation, books, music, movies and above all the pleasure of speaking and listening.
I adapt the student's personal work according to their available time and their objective (conversation, deadline for an exam, scheduled trip, etc.).
I am at your disposal for any further information.
See you soon,

I am a native German speaker and am teaching English and German as foreign languages. I have got a teaching degree and have been teaching English and German for more than two years to all levels and age groups.
I personally prefer to speak in the learning language as much as possible and to focus on all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Moreover, I like to cover practical topics that can be used in your everyday life and make classes as diverse and dynamic as possible. Nevertheless, I am always open-minded to suggestions coming from students.
Concerning materials I like to use a course book and in addition worksheets, audios, videos, etc.
In case you have got any further questions, don't hesitate to contact me :)

Hi, everyone! I'm Marissa. I'm a native speaker of English from the United States. I'm currently living in Istanbul, Turkey and I can speak Turkish. I can also understand basic Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 2011 and I've been teaching ever since. I have experience working with students from all over the world, in language schools, kindergarten, exam preparation centers, and online, not only as a teacher but also as an education coordinator.
I offer my students a very structured program to help them improve their overall English level. In our trial lesson, I will evaluate your level and we will discuss your goals. I will then provide you with a coursebook and supplementary materials suitable for your level and needs. We will use these both together in class and outside of class for homework. We will cover all necessary skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation) but we will give special attention to whatever your weaknesses may be.
Alternatively, if you are not looking for such an intensive program, I also offer guided conversation practice. I am flexible! Just write me and we can start working on a plan for you. I'm looking forward to meeting you soon. :)

Hi, I am Christin!
After training as a pastry chef and studying business administration, I traveled a lot and discovered my interest in languages. To find out more about teaching languages, I decided on further training at the Goethe Institute and completed it. During the Goethe Institute "Learn to teach German" course I was able to give individual language lessons and actively support the examination preparation for the Goethe certificate.
My lessons are needs-oriented. That means that learning goals are discussed with you and based on your level of knowledge. Whether grammar, sentence structure, pronunciation, expression or the practice of communication situations: German as a foreign and second language classes are flexible and take place in a group or one-to-one lessons with individual support and are based on your wishes and requirements. The teaching of content and topics takes place according to the respective language level. Building vocabulary, grammar and means of speaking are structured and conveyed logically building on each other. Let's get to know each other in a free trial class. I am looking forward to meeting you!

Hello,
my name is Nina, I'm from Austria and I also lived for one year and a half in Canada. I worked there as a German Teacher for adults, so I speak German, English and French.
I also teach English for beginners and advanced beginners.
My teaching methodes are totally based on the level of my student. If somebody is already advanced, I focus on communication and pronunciation. We will arrange on a topic and talk and discuss in the lesson about it.
If my student is a beginner, I'm gonna start with the basics of the German language. (the articles, the verb "to be", the pronouns...)
The learning material is all made by myself, because I'm a German teacher, so that means, I already got lots of working sheets for many topics. I send these to my student via e-mail or put it directly on the coLanguage homepage.
I'm available from Monday to Thursday between 5pm and 08:00 pm. For the weekend it's the best to just send me a request.
Of course is a free trial lesson (it's about 20 minutes) possible.
I'm happy to teach you :-)
See you soon! Nina

I'm learning German with Belinda (currently B1) and I am trying to do a final push, so i can finally start speaking. Classes are very well prepared and structured. The book/ books used in the class have exercises that actually make your brain work and are not always easy to do ( this is for people who had experience with easy and boring grammar materials). We play dialogues, we have conversations through which the teacher understands where I am with my level and is trying to make adjustments to the program. And there's a lot of homework (when you ask for it) !!! : )

Hello =)
My name is Karolin and since the beginning of 2017, while I was still living in Chile, I've been giving online classes. I really enjoy my work and it gives me the privilage to get to know people from all around the world, which is amazing.
Both in English and in German, I teach classes for beginners and advanced students. I speak Spanish fluently, but as I lived in Chile for around 5 years, both my pronounciation and my choice of words are influenced by that. I learned and teach the european Spanish but only for beginners (A1/A2). But if you don't mind the chilenean influence, I do teach to a higher level as well.
If you'd like to get to know me and my teaching methods, just contact me and we will do a free trial lesson (please do NOT by a lesson before the trial lesson, not every teacher is good for every student).
See you soon!
