In German, it's possible to use numbers as adjectives. To do so, it's important to know the difference of ordinal and cardinal numbers and their usage. This chapter will deal with it.
Ordinal numbers are not the numerals to count (eins, zwei drei). In most cases they are written (erste, zweite, dritte/first, second, third) and used:
Take online language lessons with a professional teacher
The ordinal numbers are created in most cases by adding a suffix to a cardinal number. To use a cardinal number, you have to add
Cardinal number | Pronouncing | Ordinal number with -te |
---|---|---|
1 | eins | erste |
2 | zwei | zweite |
3 | drei | dritte |
4 | vier | vierte |
5 | fünf | fünfte |
6 | sechs | sechste |
7 | sieben | siebte |
8 | acht | achte |
9 | neun | neunte |
10 | zehn | zehnte |
19 | neunzehn | neunzehnte |
Watch out for some exception of this rule! At erste and dritte there is a changed root, at siebte the- en is dropped, and at achte which only adds an -e.
Cardinal number | Pronouncing | Ordinal number with -ste |
---|---|---|
20 | zwanzig | zwanzigste |
21 | einundzwanzig | einundzwanzigste |
22 | zweiundzwanzig | zweiundzwanzigste |
30 | dreißig | dreißigste |
31 | einunddreißig | einunddreißigste |
40 | vierzig | vierzigste |
100 | hundert | hundertste |
By writing a text, the ordinal numbers are usually written out until 12. By using numbers from 13 on, just use the cardinal form and add a point (13., 14.).
In most cases, ordinal numbers are considered as adjectives. Therefore the numbers need to be declined in the same way as adjectives. Depending on the type of article, there are different types of declension:
With definite article | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
---|---|---|---|
Nominative | der zweite Hund | die zweite Puppe | das zweite Kind |
Accusative | den zweiten Hund | die zweite Puppe | das zweite Kind |
Dative | dem zweiten Hund | der zweiten Puppe | dem zweiten Kind |
Genitive | des zweiten Hundes | der zweiten Puppe | des zweiten Kindes |
With indefinite article | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
---|---|---|---|
Nominative | ein zweiter Hund | eine zweite Puppe | ein zweites Kind |
Accusative | einen zweiten Hund | eine zweite Puppe | ein zweites Kind |
Dative | einem zweiten Hund | einer zweiten Puppe | einem zweiten Kind |
Genitive | eines zweiten Hundes | einer zweiten Puppe | eines zweiten Kindes |
Without article | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
---|---|---|---|
Nominative | zweiter Hund | zweite Puppe | zweites Kind |
Accusative | zweiten Hund | zweite Puppe | zweites Kind |
Dative | zweitem Hund | zweiter Puppe | zweitem Kind |
Genitive | zweiten Hundes | zweiter Puppe | zweiten Kindes |
As ordinal numbers as adjectives usually refer to a noun, they need to be declined. They stand in front of the noun they refer to.
Keep in mind, that the numbers are used as adjectives and therefore always need to take adjective endings!
There are some forms of expressions, where it is necessary to know how to use ordinals in German. For instance:
1) By using ordinal numbers to talk about the dates in German the ordinal number stands before the month or the year.
2) Ordinal numbers without article are not just used as the ordinal numbers, but with synonyms.
In all examples the bold type words mean that the noun is ranked number one in any ranking. So the ordinal number is used in a different style.
3) Ordinal numbers can also be used as nouns.
In German, as well as in English, there are both cardinal and ordinal numbers. The cardinal numbers are the numerals used to count.
Cardinal numbers in German | Spelling and pronouncing |
---|---|
1 | eins |
2 | zwei |
3 | drei |
4 | vier |
5 | fünf |
6 | sechs |
7 | sieben |
8 | acht |
9 | neun |
10 | zehn |
11 | elf |
12 | zwölf |
13 | dreizehn |
14 | vierzehn |
15 | fünfzehn |
16 | sechszehn |
17 | siebzehn |
18 | achtzehn |
19 | neunzehn |
20 | zwanzig |
21 | einundzwanzig |
22 | zweiundzwanzig |
23 | dreiundzwanzig |
30 | dreißig |
31 | einunddreißig |
40 | vierzig |
50 | fünfzig |
60 | sechzig |
70 | siebzig |
80 | achzig |
90 | neunzig |
100 | (ein)hundert |
Using numbers higher than 20, in German the numbers are expressed in reverse (e.g. 21 = einundzwanzig = one-and-twenty).
Cardinal numbers can also be used in combination with adjectives.
If you want to learn more about this, have a look at the chapter about counting in German.
Fill in the missing words. Use the cardinal number (1, 2, 3 etc.) that is in brackets and transform it into the ordinal form (erste, zweite, dritte etc.).
Recap: Remember, that ordinal numbers from
Also keep in mind that the ordinal number functions as an adjective when it stands before a noun and therefore needs to be declined!
Example: Bald ist ihr fünfunddreißigster (35) Hochzeitstag. (It will be their 35th wedding anniversary soon.)
Wir wohnen im (15) Stock dieses Hotels. (We live on the 15th floor of this hotel.)
Petra hat am (3) September Geburtstag. (Petra has her birthday on the 3rd of september.)
Mein Pferd hat bei dem Rennen den (4) Platz belegt. (My horse finished the race on the fourth place.)
Sie beginnt bald ihr (6) Semester an der Uni. (She starts her sixth semester on the university soon.)
Ein (2) Kind können wir uns nicht leisten. (We can not afford a second child.)
Morgen ist der (23) September. (Tomorrow, it's the 23th of september.)
Das ist mein (1) Urlaub in England. (This is my first holiday in England.)
Heute ist der (121) Tag in diesem Jahr. (Today is the 121st day of this year.)
Deutsch ist seine Muttersprache, aber Französisch ist seine (2) Fremdsprache. (German is his native language, but French is his second foreign language.)
Ich lese das Buch jetzt zum (5) Mal. (I'm reading the book for the fifth time now.)
Transform this cardinal numbers into their ordinal form and write it into the boxes.
Recap: You can use the ordinal form by adding -te to numbers from 1 to 19 and adding -ste to numbers from 20 and above. Watch out for the irregular cases!
Also keep in mind that numbers higher than 12 are formed in reverse (e.g. 13 = dreizehn).
Example: cardinal: 13 = ordinal: dreizehnte (always write the feminin form)
1) 6. =
2) 44. =

I'm learning German with Belinda (currently B1) and I am trying to do a final push, so i can finally start speaking. Classes are very well prepared and structured. The book/ books used in the class have exercises that actually make your brain work and are not always easy to do ( this is for people who had experience with easy and boring grammar materials). We play dialogues, we have conversations through which the teacher understands where I am with my level and is trying to make adjustments to the program. And there's a lot of homework (when you ask for it) !!! : )

Hello =)
My name is Karolin and since the beginning of 2017, while I was still living in Chile, I've been giving online classes. I really enjoy my work and it gives me the privilage to get to know people from all around the world, which is amazing.
Both in English and in German, I teach classes for beginners and advanced students. I speak Spanish fluently, but as I lived in Chile for around 5 years, both my pronounciation and my choice of words are influenced by that. I learned and teach the european Spanish but only for beginners (A1/A2). But if you don't mind the chilenean influence, I do teach to a higher level as well.
If you'd like to get to know me and my teaching methods, just contact me and we will do a free trial lesson (please do NOT by a lesson before the trial lesson, not every teacher is good for every student).
See you soon!

I am a tutor in French as a foreign language. I specialize in conversation and communication from B1 level upwards, but I also have A2 students with whom I follow a more traditional method.
With me, you can express yourself freely and make mistakes without fear, I'll take note of them without interrupting. Essential is that the conversation flows and that we understand each other.
I am Belgian and my mother tongue is French. I have always loved literature, culture, and languages. I studied in Flanders for 10 years, lived in France and Switzerland for 4 years, and I currently live in Valencia, Spain.
I followed the DAEFLE training (teaching French as a foreign language) in 2017.
My practice: - online conversation / support for self-taught students
- coaching / correction of speeches, lectures and documents
Method: - interests and culture
- videos, images, music, reports, poems
- asking questions and seeking answers online (with guidance)
- I encourage listening to podcasts and the use of applications such as Duolingo outside of class for vocabulary and repetition

Basic rate 18€/hour
Children under 16: 20€/hour

Lessons with Elodie are less like traditional teacher-student lessons, and more like having a conversation with your French-speaking friend. Having no practical necessity to improve my French now, but wishing to do so nevertheless (and not to forget what I already knew), this is exactly the format I was looking for. Elodie usually defines a topic for the lesson (according to my preferences) and sends some materials in advance to prepare (e.g. a YouTube video to watch), which will be discussed then. She corrects persistent mistakes and explains new words but makes sure it does not interrupt the flow of conversation. It is a good language practice, but also a great way to learn new things about francophone culture (and not only!), so I definitely recommend!

I am an enthusiastic and devoted Native English speaker with excellent communication skills and I would love to help you improve your conversational English
I have a Bachelors degree in Information Design and Marketing. I am also a certified TEFL teacher. I have 15 years experience teaching students at University level and more recently I started teaching English on-line to all age groups. As part of my community service, I do volunteer English teaching to underprivileged students in Myanmar which I find hugely rewarding.
My classes focus on conversational English, in other words - we talk and read a lot, we make mistakes and correct them, we focus on pronunciation and correct sentence construction and have fun while learning and practising your English. My number one priority is always to focus on addressing your specific needs and problem areas.
Learning to speak a new language is more than just acquiring new words and the sentences, it is also about getting the confidence to use it. This confidence will come from using the language in a friendly, safe and non-judgemental environment - and that is what I offer you.
I believe I am very friendly, easy to get along with, and extremely patient.
Teaching English to me is a passion and not a job. I am super excited to share this learning journey with you.

Hello,
my name is Veronika and I am a student in Florence at the academy of fine arts. I have been in Italy for three years and I really like the Italian language. In school i learned english and during journeys i used to speak a lot of english so i'm also able to teach in english.
I am from Germany so I am a German native speaker. I have already taught German to some of my friends and would love to teach my language to more people as well. At the beginning I would like to do grammar lessons and the most used words to deepen the basic knowledge of the language. Then I will continue to have conversations in German to increase vocabulary and to give confidence in dialogue and in any case in speaking the language in real scenarios. The most important thing by learning a new language is to learn it through hearing and speaking. Being difficult at first to formulate sentences will then become easier and easier and thus you arrive at a fluent and confident way to speak the new language.
For myself I learned Italian three years ago with this method so I also know what it is like to learn a language and I can help you with my teaching to learn German that way.
I can not wait to start!
greetings Veronika
