I have a Bachelor of Arts degree but most of my experiences have been in the English as a Second Language (ESL) field. I would like to think of my method as what is known as the communicative method. Essentially I speak AND conduct ALL my lessons in English: no translations. However I am willing to use instruction in simple terms as well as with examples. If the lesson requires that I deal with ABSOLUTE beginners, seeing as I am in Italy, then I may use Italian to coax my students along.
Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, I have had to modify my lessons but I still rely on VISUAL aids, especially for absolute beginners. In any case, I do use pictures for setting up a lesson point, as a means of introducing something.
When students have me, they can be assured of someone who is patient and accepts ANY kind of query [or else why invest in a language lesson]. I try to keep the environment as light as possible, owning to the fact that most students have the pressure to succeed (if it is to pass an exam with distinction) as well as, in a sense, speaking or using a language that is not one's own. For this, I try to keep the lesson environment as informal as possible to relax students nervous or uncertain as it is.
I also believe it important to meet the students needs. What I do is no different to any other customer, whether it is in a restaurant, to a service like language instruction. It is always my hope the student comes away with having learned something. Looking forward to meeting students soon!
