Hello everyone! My name is Paola. I have been a language instructor since I graduated from college in 2005. I studied my high-school in a... bilingual school where French and Spanish were the two languages learned. Then, I completed a bachelor's degree in Languages and Sociocultural Studies in Colombia and recently finished my master's degree in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies at a Spanish University. As I have had the opportunity to live in three different countries (Colombia, Brasil, and The USA), I have been able to get in-depth knowledge of not only the languages spoken there (Spanish, Portuguese, English) but also their cultures. When you discover a new culture, you get to experience a whole new set of traditions, customs, and norms, and more importantly, a unique worldview that many times introduces you to new cognitive processes. Nowadays, it is well-known that speaking more than one language can provide manifold cognitive benefits and social gains for the multilingual individual. We are aware that knowing several languages can open a door for more and better job opportunities, improve significantly your travel experiences, and boost your brain in incredible ways. The advantages of multilingualism go beyond knowing different languages. Being a polyglot transforms you deeply and make you a different person. I am sure that I am who I am today, in great part, due to the languages I know because being a polyglot has become an essential part of my identity. I have been a teacher for more than 20 years. I am French and I studied English in France but also in England. I live in Indonesia. I am really... into adaptive teaching and innovative teaching methods using different new technologies and different skills. I create my own material and my purpose as a teacher is to adapt to my students and keep them motivated and eager to learn. I always choose subjects related to my students' background and environment, always in context and using as many authentic documents as I can. My teaching really goes beyond mere language learning but provides openness to different cultures (French but also English, American and Australian) English and French are real passions for me and I love comparing and studying both languages through my readings and different language contacts. Teaching a language is loving it and understanding it perfectly. My advantage is to know both English and French and to be able to explain to non-French or non-English speakers how things work, make relevant comparisons when possible. French is my mother tongue but I studied English thoroughly and lived in the UK. Now I am a teacher in an International school in Indonesia. I have been living here for nearly 5 years and I enjoy the opportunity to teach students from different backgrounds and different origins. Getting back to my experience as a teacher, I would say my career has been so far characterised by diversity : diversity of schools, of year levels, of interests (from adults at the university to primary school children or again, disadvantaged students who did not really see the point in learning English while living in France, or again eager and learned students who aimed at entering prestigious universities). I worked both with adults and children. The focus of my lessons is speaking. I motivate my students to start speaking from first lessons and stop waiting for a perfect language level to speak. It is very important to overcome a language barrier from the first lessons and start gaining confidence while speaking a foreign language. Making mistakes is a part of trying to master any new skill. I adapt my lessons according to personal needs of my students. Everybody is different and don't need the same things. That's why it is important to work on motivation, and why of a student in the beginning to be able to construct the best plan of actions. I have been teaching French and Italian to university students, teenagers and adults for over 6 years.
