I have had four years as a teaching in the Intermediate Phase of teaching. Teaching across various grades together with diversity in subjects had made teaching a valuable and exciting experience. However, academic success in and across all subjects begin with good language and understanding skills which are applicable in practice.
The teaching method I had adapted aligns with learner-centred approaches of teaching. This entails that the learner is given priority in lesson planning and execution with the lesson and the overall classroom environment.
In teaching languages I find it vitally important that the following materials be used accordingly within in each lesson:
-Listening and speaking (i.e read-aloud short story sessions)
- Reading and writing (i.e. using key words and concepts from a story to re-write your own).
- Spelling, grammar and word association (i.e. are the words used in the story interesting and unique, examining how grammar was used and what does these words mean in context).
The following will also be used in language teaching lessons:
-key cards
-mind-maps
- big-story books
- pictionary (pictures to describe a word in context) games
