Teacher of Greek as a second/foreign language

My name is Nikos, and I am passionate about teaching the Greek language and culture. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Philology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a Master’s Degree in Linguistics, specializing in Language and Communication, from Leiden University. My academic journey, combined with hands-on teaching experience, has shaped my approach to language education. As a result, I became fascinated with teaching my mother tongue as a second/foreign language to beginners, intermediate, and advanced students, no matter their linguistic background.

My passion for teaching began during my university years, where I had the opportunity to observe and study the teaching process in depth. One of the most crucial moments was during an undergraduate course, “Teaching a Second/Foreign Language,” which introduced me to innovative methods for teaching languages to diverse audiences.

After graduating in 2018, I took part in the Erasmus+ Traineeship program, Teaching Greek as a Foreign Language, at a high school in Prague for five months. This experience allowed me to design creative and effective teaching methods, such as card games, engaging PowerPoint presentations, and interactive activities—all tailored to each language level, from A1 to B2. By the end of the program, my students not only communicated confidently in Greek but some had even started reading Greek books!

In my lessons, I aim to create an immersive and enjoyable learning environment. Using a combination of structured language books and online educational platforms (Wordwall, Quizlet, Nuclino, etc.), I focus on grammar, vocabulary, and conversation skills, among others. I also introduce aspects of Greek daily life, culture, and history through videos, posters, and other materials, making learning both practical and inspiring, without restricting my students to studying only Grammar rules and Vocabulary. Every lesson is carefully adjusted to meet the unique needs and goals of each student, ensuring a steady progress. As communication is a sine qua non for a fruitful collaboration, from the very first day of meeting in class, both the student(s) and I agree to guidelines tailored to the students' needs and abilities.
