One day, Jean, a French boy, came to my school and told me (in French, eh!): "Hello, I have been studying Italian for 6 months, but I can't... speak". I looked at him a little surprised. Then he continued: "I need to learn to communicate in Italian. Can you help me?". The first thing I asked Marc was: "What exactly do you want to do with Italian?". We made a program with its 10 precise objectives, including: knowing how to introduce yourself and tell your week, go to a restaurant and interact, write an e-mail to ask for information, talk and describe the holidays, go shopping , etc. So we dedicated 3-4 lessons to each goal. I'm talking about goals because at the end of each goal, we did a simulation, to see if Jean could talk about his week or describe his holidays. So goal after goal, with the help of realistic videos, audios and music (a lot!), Jean left for Italy, on vacation and, all proud, he called me, telling me that he had managed very well in every situation. How did we do it? There are no special miracles or secrets: his motivation and my passion; his commitment and my methodology. Ah yes, my methodology! Each new goal is preceded by a completely oral phase, in which you slowly approach the things that will be addressed in the lesson. We can look at images together and repeat words or phrases, we can repeat a small dialogue with the help of gestures. In short, it's a bit like children do when they learn a new language: they watch, listen and repeat. Here, same thing! By doing this, when you go to read, listen or look at a text, the student will already have familiarized himself with the words or grammar he will find in the text and will understand 40% more! Ciao a tutti! My name is Laura and I am a freelance Italian teacher and translator based in Berlin. I come from Bari - a small town in... southern Italy - where I graduated in foreign languages and literature before coming to Berlin four years ago. As a linguist and lover of the Italian language, I immediately tried teaching Italian, and I can definitely say that it was a successful idea :) Me and my student we´ll deal with different kind of communicative situations and I´ll give them the opportunity to talk as much as he can in order to have the closest approach to the language. During my years of teaching I noticed how often some linguistic skills are trained more than others/are preferred over others, giving less space to first and closest linguistic experience that certainly occurs with the speaking. This is the reason why my teaching method wanted to experience a change of course, that focused exactly on the student´s ability of speaking till the final analyze of the conversation from a lexical and grammatical point of view. For the basic levels we start from the very first forms of conversation and speaking exercise, such as self presentation, describing an object or talking about one's hobbies or favourite book, with the grammar and vocabulary involved. Once the student acquires a primary familiarity with the language, I´d let the student keep training with more speaking exercises, first with communicative situations in which we come across daily like ordering something in a bar, asking for directions or organizing a weekend out ´til he/she´ll able to express his/her opinion and to have pure and free conversation on various topics, such as nature, technology, the academic and working world, telling about his/her travels or even on actual world news.
