Welkom! Being on this page means that you have some interest in learning the Dutch language. If you want to learn the basics of the Dutch language this is the right place to be! You probably already know some words in Dutch since there are some similarities between the Dutch and English language. For example, the word "papier" in Dutch is very similar to its English translation "paper". You will definitely learn more words that are similar to English, or are completely the same!
Learn Dutch online and for free
You can learn Dutch for free with this online self-study course. The course is separated in topics that are interesting for learners of Dutch. The chapters include several exercises where you can train your skills. The chapters of the course will help you to improve your Dutch reading, writing, pronunciation and listening skills.
Learn Dutch grammar and vocabulary
This course will give you a basic understanding of Dutch grammar and vocabulary. In each chapter, vocabulary about a certain topics will be explained extensively. First of all, you will familiarise yourself with 'The Dutch alphabet and pronunciation'. When you master the Dutch pronunciation, you can learn about subjects such as: 'the numbers in Dutch, 'Dutch colours' and 'Food and drinks in Dutch'. Do not forget to take a look at the grammar topics that are included on some pages, these topics will help you to understand the Dutch language even better!
Should I learn Dutch?
After reading this, you might wonder: why should I learn Dutch? Well there are several good reasons to learn Dutch:
- Dutch is the native language of approximately 23 million people in 3 countries: The Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname.
- The language is closely related to the English language, thus learning it will be relatively easy for English native speakers.
- If you know the Dutch language, you can also understand the closely-related language Afrikaans which is spoken in South-Africa and Namibia. Have a look at the two languages to see the similarity: Dutch: Wat is jouw naam? Afrikaans: Wat is jou naam?
- Learning Dutch will help you to understand the culture and society of the Netherlands. Speaking and understanding Dutch wil make daily activities such as reading the newspaper, doing groceries or watching television much easier and more fun!
