Hi my name is Irma Caputo. I am 34 years old. I am so glad to start my experience with you! I love my job and I love to offer the people the experience of a fulfill immersion in another culture through the language.
I am a language teacher and university researcher.
I completed may Phd in "Estudos da linguagem" in Brazil at Puc-Rio de Janeiro with a thesis about philosophy of language, translation and esthetic; the core point was Nuno Ramo's book "Ó" (2008), that I translated to Italian (my mother tongue).
I always studied in the field of foreign languages and literature and along the time I took some courses and specialization about how to teach a foreign or second language (as DITALS II for example).
I have a long teaching experience, especially of Italian and Portuguese, as foreign languages. I worked already in Brazil, Argentina, Italy and Germany. Some big institutions were I thaught languages are: Italiana Institute for culture of Rio de Janeiro, Italian Institute Alessandro Manzoni of Buenos Aires, Enel Brazil.
The Method:
I work with a communicative method. The first goal is to communicate. The oral expression is the focus, but it doesn't mean that we will not study grammar. Starting from some functions of the language, that is how to reach a communicative goal, we study the vocabulary and the frases we need to reach this goal and through a reflection about these phrases (inductive and deductive), we will also study the grammar structure we need to produce them. Even if we focus on oral expression, it will be important the harmonic development of all linguistics abilities such as reading, listening, writing, speaking. Other abilities such as intercultural communications will be really important.
Material used:
The material will be deposited in digital format in the Dropbox account of the course and the student will be responsible for printing it.
Handout composed by a selection of authentic materials:
- readings taken from newspapers, magazines, books and blogs with exercises and activities created ad hoc for the development of specific objectives based on the proposed input;
- audios of radio conversations, live dialogues, and TV programs with exercises and activities ad hoc created for the development of specific objectives based on the input proposed;
- videos taken from specific channels of the main social networks and the Internet, television programmes, websites of different types taken from the Brazilian network with exercises and activities created ad hoc for the development of specific objectives based on the proposed input.
This material will be integrated with a book that we will use during the lessons and some grammars handbook
Didactic structure and approach
Based on a selection of topics treated through the chosen material in the manner mentioned above, there will be an associated programme related to the structures of the language (grammar) and stimuli for the development of pragmatic, sociolinguistic, and intercultural skills. The grammar, therefore, will be approached in a deductive and reflective way from analyses of the proposed materials. It will always occur after the analysis and approach of the materials, which represent the language in a living context, so that structures will never be presented loosely in the form of a lesson.
The selected topics, in order to facilitate a better understanding and approach to the reality of contemporary world, cover and address different areas. In the first levels (A1, A2) the topics are especially connected to the functions of language (how to orde something at the bar, how to reserve a room).
I also work as free-lance interpreters and translators (italian <> Brazilian Portuguese), it helps to better understand some linguistic processes.
