Grammatically speaking, nouns are parts of speech. They are words that denote a person, an animal, a place, a thing, an idea. The nouns have a very important function and they can take different roles. They could be: subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nominatives, object complements, etc.
The nouns in the Bulgarian language have three grammatical genders - masculine, feminine and neuter. Usually you can recognize the gender of the noun by it's ending.
Gender | Ending | Example |
---|---|---|
masculine | - consonant | слон |
feminine | - а/я | земя |
neuter | - е/о | село |
Take online language lessons with a professional teacher
The nouns in the Bulgarian language have singular and plural form. The nouns have different endings depending on their gender. The table below demonstrates only the general rules. There are a lot of exceptions which you can study in the further lessons.
Male | Female | Neuter | |
---|---|---|---|
nominative form | сандвич | жена | село |
plural form | сандвичи | жени | села |
The definite article of the nouns in the Bulgarian language is always the ending of the word (not separated). There are three different forms, depending on the gender - male, female, neuter.
Male +а/ът | Female +та | Neuter +то | |
---|---|---|---|
nominative form | мъж | жена | дете |
with definite article | мъжа/ мъжът | жената | детето |
The male nouns may receive short or long definite article, depending on its role in the sentence. If it is a subject - it gets the long article, if it is an object - the short one.
Мъжът пие бира. | The man is drinking beer. |
Бирата на масата е на мъжа. | The beer belongs to the man. |

Hi there,
I am glad to meet you.
First of all, let me congratulate you on the decision to learn or improve a new language. In your case this is Bulgarian.
My country, Bulgaria, is a beautiful country with nice and hospitable people. It is an ancient land with a great history and rich culture. Having learned our language you will be able to get in touch freely with our good people and country.
I come from the town of Vidin, Bulgaria. I am a qualified English and Bulgarian teacher. I graduated back in 1972 from Sofia University with an MA in English Philology and Bulgarian Philology as a second subject. Since then I have spent most of my professional career teaching Bulgarian students.

Dear Student,
I am Daniela, a qualified teacher of Bulgarian as a foreign language.
I will be delighted to help you learn Bulgarian. I am originally from Sofia, Bulgaria. I am passionate about languages; I am fluent in English and Spanish, Czech and Slovenian. I have helped many foreigners now living in Bulgaria to better understand and speak with confidence in their social environment. I am always interested in their motivation to learn Bulgarian and I adapt myself completely to the needs and tastes of each student. My teaching style is very communicative, I teach through dialogues, and real situations so my students start speaking from the very first lesson. I make my classes fun and enjoyable for all students, as I believe it is very important that the student enjoys learning, that they look forward to the next class. We often talk about culture, traditions, history and all kinds of topics that interest the student and in this way, progress is much more natural and faster.
Many thanks.
Best regards, Daniela

Dani is a wonderful teacher. I'm a native Bulgarian speaker with a non-Bulgarian speaking son. For years I have tried to motivate him to learn from me, with minimal success, unfortunately. Since we started lessons with Dani, my son is now able to understand and engage in basic conversational exchanges; and this is only after seven lessons! Dani comes prepared to the lessons, but is flexible and able to change lesson plans on the spot, based on what the interests of the student may be that day. Some days my son wants to talk about sports cars, others he likes to talk about sports. Dani takes his lead and engages him in the conversation topic of his choice, while remaining focused on the large picture of teaching a language; grammar rules, conjugation, prepositions, sentence construction and much, much more!

Hello,
My name is Zlatko. I believe that learning Bulgarian online with me gives you the best of both worlds: fast progress and enjoyment.Taking on the challenge to learn a new language is impressive. The reasons might be different. Some people give it a go because they just like new things. Others need to learn a new language because they are moving to a country where the language is spoken. Remember that whatever your reason is, it is your motivation that is the key to successful learning.
Who am I and why to pick me:
- online and face-to-face teaching experience: over 15 years helping hundreds of students achieve their language goals
- flexibility: willing to tailor my techniques to both your interests and specific needs
- patience and excellent listening skills
- honesty and collaboration: let's build trust and consider our work as a partnership
- native Bulgarian speaker with oustanding educational background
- sense of humour
Material
All lessons are interlinked to promote better and more memorable learning, with the flexibility to pick out key sections to focus on certain language points. All language is clearly signposted and scaffolded so there is great clarity of progression of learning - students can really feel they are getting somewhere.
In general, my teaching style includes, but is not limited to:
- speaking practice through role-play activities
- stotytelling and discussions
- gap filling excercises
- listening comprehension
- vocabulary development
- accent reduction
How does that grab you? If interested, drop me a line and we will discuss your language goals and expectations.
I OFFER a 15 MINUTE TRIAL LESSON TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT MY TEACHING METHOD LOOKS LIKE.
Hope to see you soon.
Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of every lesson:
1. Review what you covered in your previous lesson.
2. Focus on things you had difficulty with. I will definitely go over them.
3. It is always a great idea to take notes during your lessons. It helps you stay more focused on what you are learning.
4. Feel free to ask me if anything has come up since your last lesson that you want clarification on. Your questions do not have to be prior lesson related, maybe you are just curious about how to say something.
5. Be sure you have completed your homework assignments. If you were not able to complete them, make notes about what stumped you. Were the instructions not clear enough, was the vocabulary beyond your level of comprehension, were the grammar rules too overwhelming, was there too much homework for the time you had planned to spend on it, and so on.
6. Contact me prior to your next lesson if there are any issues or changes you would like to make me aware of so I can have a chance to make changes to your learning plan.
I look forward to seeing you in my lessons.

Hello! My name is Deborah! I am a language instructor. I teach Italian, English and Bulgarian. I have more than 15 years teaching experience, both face-to-face and online to individual as well as to small and large groups. At the moment I am teaching Italian in a private school in Sofia, Bulgaria- where I lived for more than 10 years. I teach English to students ready to move to English speaking countries for work, and to students who need Еnglish for their career. I also prepare students for exams (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE), and I offer language courses for communication and travelling purposes.
I attended the College (tourism) in Lucca-Italy. I have a diploma in Secretarial and Business Administration from the South Kensington and Chelsea Collage in London- (I lived in London few years ago). I have a TEFL certificate -grade A. and an ECL certificate in Bulgarian C1 with 96/100. Therefore, I have a good knowledge of how languages work and I can provide my students with helpful insight. Teaching is my passion, and I am constantly in search for new methods to help my students to get through the challenges and the difficults when learning a new language.
I am an enthusiastic, dedicated and adaptable teacher. I always use the communicative method in my teaching and I try to make my students feel comfortable by creating a funny and relaxed environment.
I hope to see you soon in one of my classes!

Deborah is an excellent teacher that understands how to teach adults and is able to design individual lessons that reflect the learner’s needs. She is professional, patient and has a deep knowledge of the Bulgarian culture and language. Deborah is aware of the importance of grammar to create a solid base for learning but her lessons always offer a constructive balance between the rules and a more fluid approach. I really enjoy the lessons and I feel my Bulgarian is improving; I can recommend Deborah to anyone that needs or wants to learn a language in a constructive and effective way.
