Hi! Thank-you for reading my ESL teaching profile. I hope it helps you understand a bit about how I plan to teach you.
I have one year experience teaching all ages at a YMCA in Taiwan, and 1.5 years experience teaching grade school Chinese students online.
One technique I use for group lessons is called the “Communicative Approach”. I get my students to communicate with each other, such as one student asking another what his/her favourite movie is and why. “Content Based Instruction” is where I encourage you to study something you are interested in, so you absorb the English naturally. Combining these two approaches, I will then ask you to share a bit about what you learned with each other.
In opposition to the Communicative Approach is the “Audio-Lingual (or Army) Approach”. This is where you are drilled in sentence structure. Also I will drill for pronounciation, stressing accent reduction.
I will also use music and video, but not too much.
When teaching vocabulary, I will often use pictures - sort of like flash cards. The idea is that pictures help activate your memory.
Another fun technique is “Scrambled Sentences”. I provide a series of sentences where the word order is mixed up, and you have to arrange them the right way.
In summary, I use a variety of techniques, many that I learned while completing my TESOL certificate. Most of the materials I make up myself. You are welcome to give me feedback on which techniques and materials are most useful and enjoyable.
